Ola a todos, já que oficialmente hoje o Seventh Tree do Goldfrapp está sendo lançado (Na Inglaterra pelo menos) eu resolvi falar sobre ele. Estou inclusive esperando chegar minha edição de luxo juntamente com meu bundle de singles do A&E. Vamos lá faixa a faixa.

Clowns - O Album começa com um clima bem leve, um tanto quanto bucólico, com barulhos da natureza. As letras falam sobre cirurgia plástica, perguntando “Por que você quer parecer a Barbie?” e fala de seios que duram para sempre.

Little Bird - A segunda faixa lembra bastante algo já feito para o primeiro álbum Felt Mountain. Continua o ambiente “natureza”, relacionando a liberdade de um pássaro com a liberdade de uma mulher.

Happiness - Essa faixa, pergunta a uma pessoa como ela encontrou a felicidade. A faixa é um pouco mais agitadinha que as anteriores. Fala de encontrar o seu eu interior, de achar a felicidade e o amor de verdade, mesmo que você tenha pagar por isso.

Road To Somewhere - Fala sobre “feridas abertas” e “se é muito tarde”. Como título diz é a busca por algo, em uma estrada para algum lugar onde se vai começar de novo, levando para o reconciliamento.

Some People - Novamente vemos como tema a solidão e o vazio que a fama pode trazer. Aqui se fala de o “mais claras as luzes e os sorrisos mais vazios os apertos de mão”. Também fala sobre dever algo a si mesmo.

A&E - Primeiro single tirado do álbum. Seu título significa Accident & Emergency. Uma pessoa se pergunta como ela foi parar ali, no A&E, provavelmente fala de uma tentativa de suicídio com uso de remédios ou drogas. Novamente fala de solidão, de querer encontrar a pessoa amada, tentando que usar como justificativa essa saudade.

Cologne Cerrone Houdini - Música mais sensual do disco. Novamente fala sobre algo deixado para trás, sobre estar juntos em outro mundo. Ao mesmo tempo fala sobre algo mais casual, efêmero.

Caravan Girl - Música mais agitada do álbum, fala novamente de “fugir daqui, eu e você e trazer tudo de volta”. Fala de outra mulher livre, a Caravan Girl, que não vai negar nem ter vergonha de seguir o longo e errado caminho.

Monster Love - Última música do álbum, e, como em boa parte do mesmo, fala sobre voltar para algo perdido, reconstruir. “Tudo volta ao redor, nos trazendo de volta, aqui é quando começamos e onde terminamos”. Fala sobre ser consumido novamente por um amor monstruoso.

O álbum no geral é bem visual, Goldfrapp e Gregory em suas letras, e também em seus sons, constroem um cenário que fala de reconstrução, de perda, de saudades, nostalgia, de procurar a liberdade, principalmente feminina, da fama que traz a solidão, o vazio. Seventh Tree foi lançado hoje, o single A&E semana passada. Goldfrapp fala que esse é o contraponto sensual de Supernature que era bem mais electro/dance e glitter/glam. No geral se aproxima mais do primeiro, mesmo tendo suas diferenças, com sons mais acústicos e “naturais” que te transportam para um cenário.

Como todos sabem eu adoro Vinil, tenho até uma vitrolinha em casa pra ouvi-los. O que muitos não sabem é que na Europa eles ainda são produzidos, todos os albums que são lançados tem sua versão em CD e em Vinil. Nos EUA tbm, mas em escala menor. O novo album da Róisín Murphy está bom demais. Muitas referências à década de 80, com certeza um dos melhores do ano.

Essa música é do Macross, um desenho que eu vi há milhões e milhões de anos atrás, e sempre achei tão bunitchinha!!! Lembra muito a minha infância e o Rio de Janeiro, já que assistia esse desenho todos os dias em uma das férias em que estive lá, isso há uns 15 anos ou mais, nossa!!! Quem cantava essa música era a personagem Lynn Minmey (algo assim), e Macross era legal demais, procurem no Wikipedia que tem lá! Só não me pergunte o nome da artista que dublava a Minmey porque eu realmente não sei!!!

On December 5th The Cure will release a new DVD entitled ‘Festival 2005′. This 30 song DVD is a wonderful reminder of how and why The Cure remain one of the most influential bands on the planet.

In 2005 a nascent Cure trio of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper celebrated the return of former guitarist Porl Thompson with a series of nine eclectic headline festival shows across Europe (Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sicily, Hungary, Greece, and Turkey). The DVD was edited by Daren Butler and mixed by Keith Uddin in collaboration with Robert Smith.

The Cure e… Bananarama

Ola a todos hoje vou falar do Bananarama, um grupo britânico pop formado em 1981 por Siobhan Fahey, Sara Dallin, e Keren Woodward que fez sua fama com músicas pop e new wave. São conhecidas também pela maneira que o grupo cantava suas músicas, todas cantavam juntas na mesma nota, pois gravavam no mesmo microfone ao mesmo tempo. No top ten britânico já conseguiram emplacar 10 singles e 3 no top ten americano, sendo que um primeiro lugar. Alguns dos seus maiores sucessos internacionais incluem “Cruel Summer“, “Venus“, e “I Heard a Rumour“.As integrantes do Bananarama moravam em um andar acima do local de ensaio utilizado pelos antigos membros do Sex Pistols: Steve JonesPaul Cook. Com a ajuda deles o grupo gravou sua primeira demo, “Aie a Mwana” um cover do grupo Black Blood em Swahili. A demo foi etregue a Demon Records, que ofereceu as garotas seu primeiro contrato. A música foi um sucesso underground na Inglaterra e fez com que o grupo conseguisse um contrato com a London Records onde permaneceram até 1993. e

Os dois primeiros albums do grupo foram produzidos por Jolley & Swain. Deep Sea Skiving de 1983 continha os hitsingles “Really Saying Something” e “Shy Boy” assim como o cover de “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye“. O segundo album, Bananarama (1984) tinha uma proposta mais séria com temas como estupro, (”Robert DeNiro’s Waiting“), drogas (”Hot Line to Heaven“), e apatia social (”Rough Justice“). No album pode ser encontrado um dos seus maiores sucessos, “Cruel Summer” (1983) que fez parte da trilha do filme The Karate Kid. Na época seus videos continham mensagens feministas, sempre com bom humor, como por exemplo em Na Na Na, que as garotas aprendem boxe para se defender nas ruas.

Em 1986, após ouvir o single You Spin Me Round, do grupo Dead Or Alive, as garotas entraram em contato com os produtores Stock Aitken Waterman para algumas músicas de True Confessions. Essa mudança resultou no maior sucesso do grupo, o hit “Venus” (um remake eurobeat do grupo Shocking Blue de 1970). O tom dance típico dos produtores SAW fez com que o grupo se aproximasse da produção de músicas pop.

O video para “Venus” marcou uma mudança total no grupo para uma direção mais glamourosa e sensual da imagem do grupo que antes tinha um visual mais ingênuo de seus trabalhos anteriores, assim como o uso do visual influenciado pelo som Hi-NRG.

Com o sucesso de “Venus”, toda a produção do quarto album Wow! de 1987 foi transferida de Jolley & Swain para o SAW. Consequentemente o som do grupo mudou de New Wave com influências de rock e pop para dance e Europop.

O album tem os hitsingles “I Heard a Rumour“, “Love in the First Degree” e “I Can’t Help It“. Em 1988 elas entraram para o Guinness Book of World Records como o grupo feminino com mais hitsingles nas paradas na história, um recorde que elas ainda mantém. Na época do lançamento do terceiro single de Wow! Fahey, que havia casado com Dave Stewart do Eurythmics, deixou o grupo. Logo depois ela ressugiria como parte de dupla Shakespears Sister com Marcella Detroit. Com a saída de Fahey, Jacquie O’Sullivan (ex-integrante do Shillelagh Sisters) entrou para o grupo. O single “I Want You Back” foi regravado com O’Sullivan, assim como o cover das Supremes “Nathan Jones“, ambos para a coletânea de 1988 Greatest Hits Collection.

O single para o Comic Relief de 1989 foi gravado por elas, um cover dos Beatles, a música “Help!“, com o grupo Lananeeneenoonoo, que era uma paródia das garotas formado pelas comediantes inglesas French & Saunders com Kathy Burke.

Em 1991 o album Pop Life (o melhor delas na minha opinião) viu o grupo trabalhando com vários produtores incluindo Youth (que foi baixista do Killing Joke), Shep Pettibone, e Steve Jolley da dupla Jolley & Swain. Também incorporaram uma gama maior de sons ao seu trabalhando, como reggae, flamenco, e acid house se revelando o trabalho mais maduro e alternativo do grupo até a época, mesmo não tendo sido tão bem recebido pelo público como seus trabalhos anteriores. O album rendeu os singles “Only Your Love“, “Preacher Man“, “Long Train Running” e “Tripping on Your Love“. Depois de uma turnê mundial, lançamento de Pop Life e seus singles O’Sullivan deixou o grupo para formar o breve Slippery Feet.Em 1993, Dallin e Woodward voltaram como uma dupla com o album Please Yourself, que mesmo contra a vontade da agora dupla trouxe de volta a produção do SAW, que agora era também uma dupla com Stock e Waterman, por insistência da gravadora London Records. Ironicamente o primeiro single, “Movin’ On“, mesmo que tentasse marcar uma evolução trazia a banda de volta ao som Eurodisco, que o próprio grupo não queria mais. Mais dois singles foram lançados “Last Thing on My Mind” e “More, More, More“. Esse foi o último album na London Records. Como as gravações desse album foram mais uma obrigação do que outra coisa, o som do disco, por mais que tenha seus momentos é uma cópia de tudo que elas haviam feito antes de Pop Life.

Seu próximo passo foi em 1995 o album Ultra Violet (I Found Love no Japão) em uma nova gravadora e tinha o grande sucesso das pistas “Every Shade of Blue” (eu dancei muito isso na 320, Hangar, Da Vinci e Tropical, caralho 320 e Hangar, to velho, só faltava a Mikonos, Spectrum era muito galeroso!!!). O album também rendeu o single “Take Me to Your Heart” e “I Found Love” no Japão.

Em 1998 Dallin, Woodward e Fahey gravaram a música “Waterloo” do ABBA para um tributo ao Eurovision A Song For Eurotrash. Em 2001 lançaram o album Exotica na França com um cover de George Michael, “Careless Whisper“. A produção ficou a cargo de Pascal Caubet e também o marido de Dallin, Bassey Walker. O album também tinha influências Latinas e R&B assim como dance e também reinterpretações de antigos sucessos.

Em 2002 o grupo já havia vendido 40 milhões de albums ao redor do mundo. No mesmo ano lançaram mais uma coletânea, The Very Best of Bananarama. No mesmo ano o grupo celebrou seu 20º aniversário (com participação de Fahey) no London Astoria em Londres com 3 mil pessoas.

Com o new wave e a década de 80 novamente em voga, em 2005 o grupo lançou um remix do seu hit Really Saying Something como single, uma versão de Solasso. Em julho o grupo lançou o single “Move in My Direction“, que alcançou o 14º lugar nas paradas inglêsas, tornando-se o 26º top 40. O segundo single lançado foi “Look on the Floor (Hypnotic Tango)“, ambos do album Drama.

Em 2006 a Warner Bros anunciou o lançamento do The Twelve Inches of Bananarama, uma coletânea de remixes 12″ pela primeira vez em CD para Outubro. Para 2007 existem planos de mais uma nova coletânea para marcar os 25 anos de seu primeiro single.

Belle & Sebastian é um banda indie escocesa formada em Glasgow em 1996 quando Stuart Murdoch conheceu o baixista Stuart David. Juntos gravaram algumas demos e através da Stow College’s Music Business lançaram um single pelo selo, Electric Honey. A banda já tinha algumas músicas e o selo ficou impressionado com as demos, Belle and Sebastian, que tirou seu nome do livro para crianças Belle et Sébastien, da escritora francesa Cécile Aubry. Seu primeiro album Tigermilk foi gravado em três dias e foram lançadas 100 cópias em vinil. Essas cópias podem ser encontradas por £400. Nessa época a banda havia aumentado seu número de integrantes com Stevie Jackson (guitarra e voz), Isobel Campbell (cello/voz), Chris Geddes (teclados) e Richard Colburn (bateria).

Com o sucesso do primeiro album, a banda assinou com a Jeepster Records em Agosto de 1996 e If You’re Feeling Sinister, seu segundo album, foi lançado três meses depois. Antes da gravação do disco, Sarah Martin (violino/voz) entrou para a banda. Em 1997 uma série de EPs foram lançados. O primeiro foi Dog on Wheels, contendo quatro demos que foram gravadas antes do primeiro album.

O Ep Lazy Line Painter Jane saiu em seguida e foi gravado em um hall de Igreja e tinha os vocais de Monica Queen. O último desses EPs foi 3.. 6.. 9 Seconds of Light, lançado em outubro. O EP foi considerado o Single da semana tanto pela NME quanto pela Melody Maker.

Em 1998 The Boy with the Arab Strap foi lançado. Durante as gravações, Mick Cooke foi convidado para fazer parte da banda. Em 1999, a banda lançou o album Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, que se tornou o primeiro album a alcançar o top 10 no Reino Unido. O single “Legal Man“, também foi lançando para para promover o album e a banda fez sua primeira participação no Top of the Pops.

O single “Jonathan David” foi lançado em 2001, seguido de “I’m Waking Up to Us” Em 2002 a banda gravou a trilha do filme Storytelling (Storytelling de Todd Solondz).

Em 2002 a banda deixou a Jeepster e assinou com a Rough Trade Records. Em 2003 eles lançaram Dear Catastrophe Waitress. Um documentario também foi lançado pela Jeepster, Fans Only, com videos, apresentações ao vivo e outras filmagens. O single “Step Into My Office, Baby” foi lançado em seguida sendo o primeiro single/EP com uma música tirada de um album.

O segundo single retirado desse album foi “I’m a Cuckoo” tornando-se o mais famoso da banda chegando ao 14º lugar nos charts ingleses. O EP Books foi lançado em seguida e no mesmo ano a banda foi nomeada para o Mercury Music Prize e o Ivor Novello Award. Em 2005, a banda foi votada como a mais famosa da Escócia vencendo bandas como Simple Minds, Idlewild, Travis, Franz Ferdinand, The Proclaimers, entre outros.

A coletânea Push Barman to Open Old Wounds que reunia todos os singles e EPs lançados pela Jeepster foi lançado em 2005, enquanto a banda gravava seu sétimo album na California. O resultado foi o album The Life Pursuit de 2006, produzido por Tony Hoffer. O album se tornou o de maior sucesso da banda chegando ao oitavo lugar das paradas britânicas.

The Gossip é uma banda americana de rock alternativo formada no Arkansas. Tem influencias de bandas como Yeah Yeah Yeahs e Le Tigre. Muito bacana, formada por Beth Ditto, nos vocais, Brace Paine, guitarra, e Hannah Blilie na bateria.

Ola a todos, hoje em Music is My Radar vou falar de outra banda que sou muito fã, o Depeche Mode.
Depeche Mode é um grupo de música eletrônica formada em Basildon, Inglaterra, em 1980. É um das bandas que mais durou e que mais fez sucesso surgida do New Wave e New Romantic, mesmo sendo considerados mais Futuristas. Em 2006 estima-se que ele já venderam 72 milhões de albums ao redor do mundo. Influenciaram muitos grupos devido ao seu trabalho inovador, técnicas de gravação e uso de samplers. Mesmo tendo influenciado a música eletrônica moderna massivamente ele se mantém no estilo alternativo.

Eu entrei em contato com o Depeche Mode da mesma forma que entrei em contato com o Siouxsie & The Banshees, através do The Cure, e o engraçado é que eu não gostava antes, achava bacaninha, mas foi depois de comprar o cd Tribute For The Masses que o The Cure participa com um cover da música World In My Eyes eu fiquei curioso e comprei a coletânea que havia acabado de sair 86-98!!! E virei fã na hora, a minha sorte é que na época todos os albums deles estavam sendo lançados pela falecida Roadrunner.

Franz Ferdinand é um banda Britânica de indie rock/Art rock mais precisamente de Glasgow, Escócia. Acredita-se que a banda tenha tirado seu nome do Arquiduque da Austria, mas a banda fala que na verdade eles tiraram seu nome de um cavalo.

Sua estreia foi com o album Franz Ferdinand lançado em 2004 direto em terceiro lugar nos charts ingleges, ganhando no mesmo ano o prêmio Mercury Music Prize. Seu segundo album, You Could Have It So Much Better, estreou em primeiro lugar nas paradas inglesas. Até então a banda já lançou 7 singles, 1 single duplo, e um video-single. São influenciados pela década de 1980, post-punk, garage rock e new wave e atualmente exploram o mundo do hip hop.

O Franz Ferdinand com certeza é uma das minhas bandas favoritas da última leva de bandas britânicas, eu recomendo com certeza, aliais, difícil é alguém ainda não ter ouvido falar ou conhecer.

Ola a todos!!! Hoje no NTWICM eu vou falar sobre o Nobuo Uematsu, que é um japonês muito foda. Ele é mais famoso pelo seu trabalho com trilhas de vários jogos e pela sua banda Black Mages. Começou sua carreira compondo músicas para propagandas, mas foi em 1986 que ele se juntou a Squaresoft para fazer a trilha para o primeiro Final Fantasy. Seu estilo abrange estilos como Clássico, New Age e Eletronica (do Synth ao Trance) e uma das suas maiores influencias é a banda Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Sua música se tornou tão famosa que ele chegou a ser eleito pela Time Magazine na lista “Time 100: The Next Wave — Music”. Isso também o rendeu várias apresentações e turnês ao redor do mundo com concertos como “Tour de Japon – music from FINAL FANTASY” e “DEAR FRIENDS - music from FINAL FANTASY” com a filarmônica de Los Angeles.

Em 2003 Uematsu lançou sua banda The Black Mages, onde ele pegou várias músicas do Final Fantasy e as re-arranjou como Heavyt Metal, Melódico, Hard Rock, etc. Esse feito rendou dois ótimos albums, The Black Mages e The Black Mages II: The Skies Above.

Hoje vou falar de uma dupla inglesa de música eletrônica que tenho escutado demais, se chama Goldfrapp. O grupo tem Alison Goldfrapp nos vocais, teclados e sintetizadores, e também Will Gregory nos teclados e sintetizadores. É conhecido por seu pioneirismo em música eletrônica com vocais cristalinos, visual teatral e decadência “glam-sex”.Seu primeiro álbum, Felt Mountain, foi lançado em 2000, e teve um pequeno sucesso, fazendo com que o grupo chamasse atenção, mas em 2003 eles lançaram o álbum Black Cherry, que fez com que eles ganhassem reconhecimento mundial. Nesse disco a banda tomou uma direção mais Glam eletrônico do que chill out no primeiro, e foi um grande sucesso comercial. Em 2005 eles lançaram o Álbum Supernature, que chegou ao segundo lugar nas paradas britânicas se tornando o disco de maior sucesso do grupo até hoje.

Alison Goldfrapp, no começo, chegou a cantar em várias bandas punks e góticas, mas foi na universidade, Middlesex University, que Goldfrapp começou a explorar suas habilidades criativas. Ela começou a ganhar fama com sua voz e talento tendo participado de alguns álbuns antes de sair da faculdade, como o álbum Maxinquaye do Tricky e o Snivilisation do Orbital.

Alguns demos de Goldfrapp foram passados para Will Gregory, que na época era compositor de trilhas. Gregory havia decidido que era hora de parar de trabalhar em projetos pequenos e queria algo que pudesse expor suas idéias. Depois de ouvir Goldfrapp cantar em uma versão demo de “Human”, Gregory decidiu que Alice era alguém que ele queria realmente conhecer, alguém que ele queria estar perto, pois sentia uma conexão com ela. Gregory ligou para Goldfrapp e a convidou para gravar uma demo para um filme no qual ele estava trabalhando para ver ser eles funcionariam como dupla.

Mesmo nunca tendo terminado a demo, os dois resolveram enviar várias fitas e demos um para o outro e em 1999 resolveram formar uma dupla por ter os mesmos gostos musicais e interesses e escolheram o sobrenome de Alice como nome. No mesmo ano eles assinaram com a gravadora Mute, do Depeche Mode.

Essa semana em Now!!! That’s What I call Music vou falar de uma dupla Norueguesa que estou ouvindo pra caramba, Kings Of Convenience. Eles foram formados em Bergen, Noruega por Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe. São conhecidos pelo som que se assimila muito a Simon & Garfunkel e Belle And Sebastian, com alguma coisa de MPB também.

Eles já vieram ao Brasil ano passado para o Tim Festival!!! Eu recomendo mesmo essa banda!!!

Ola a todos, hoje pra ser mais light, vou falar apenas de um album (realmente deu um trabalho do cacete falar do The Cure semana passada!!!). O album que escolhi saiu recentemente, Life Pursuit do Belle And Sebastian.

Lançado dia 6 de fevereiro desse ano, já é o album de maior sucesso da banda escocesa. Mostra um pouco uma volta do Belle And Sebastian do começo, com um som mais para o Rock do que para o Folk, som que podemos identificar nos primeiros albums Tigermilk e The Boy With The Arab Strap.

Nesse album conseguimos identificar mais guitarras, e, também como no início da banda, os vocais são quase todos de Stuart Murdoch, com Stevie Jackson cantando em poucas músicas, fazendo mais backing vocals com Sarah Martin, que nesse album ficou apenas nos backing vocals.

Com certeza é um ótimo album, provavelmente um dos melhores do Belle And Sebastian. O Disco já rendeu dois singles, Funny Little Frog e The Blues Are Still Blues. O Tracklist é o seguinte:

Eu dou Nota:9 pra esse album, realmente bom demais!!!

Bom hoje estreio a culuna Now! That’s What I Call Music com a banda que todos sabem que é a minha favorita, The Cure. Essa é a história bem resumida desse que pra mim é a melhor banda de todos os tempos.

O The Cure se formou em 1976, quando Robert Smith, um jovem de 17 anos formou a banda Malice com os amigos de escola, Michael Dempsey (baixo), Laurence Tolhurst (bateria) e Porl Thompsom (guitarra). Logo depois a banda passou a se chamar Easy Cure. Robert fala que todas as bandas que eles gostava daquela época tinha o The na frente, só que para ele The Easy Cure soava muito idiota e americano, a banda então passou a se chamar The Cure em 1977. Com a saída de Porl, o agora trio, assinou contrato com o selo Fiction de Chris Parry da gravadora Polydor.


Seu primeiro single foi a música Killing And Arab, que causou certa controvérsia na impressa, que acusava a música de ser uma música racista, e na verdade era inspirada no romance The Stranger de Albert Camus. Em 1979 a banda lançou seu primeiro album, Three Imaginary Boys. Para promover o album a banda saiu em uma turnê massiva com grandes grupos da época, como Joy Division e Siouxsie & The Banshees. A partir dessa turnê que nasceu a amizade entre Robert Smith e Steve Severin, que viria trazer para o público anos depois o album Blue Sunshine, do grupo The Glove, que era uma mistura de integrantes do The Cure com integrantes dos The Banshees, além disso, Smith foi guitarrista da banda em algumas ocasiões.


Depois dessa turnê com o lançamento do single Boys Don’t Cry, o primeiro album da banda viu uma reedição com músicas diferentes e nova arte e título, Boys Don’t Cry. Smith queria levar a banda em uma direção mais obscura e depressiva enquanto Dempsey queria continuar tocando o mesmo estilo. Dempsey deixou a banda em 1980 e então Simon Gallup assumiu os baixos e Mathieu Hartley os teclados.



Ainda nesse ano, o quarteto lançou o disco Seventeen Seconds, produzido por Michael Hedges, que chegou ao top 20 na Inglaterra e também rendeu o primeiro hitsingle da banda, A Forest. Depois da turnê o Hartley abandonou a banda e Smith decidiu que o The Cure continuaria como um trio. Em 1981 a banda lança o disco Faith, que chega ao top 14 na Inglaterra, e o single Primary foi lançado. O disco foi gravado debaixo de muita dificuldade devido aos problemas da banda com o álcool e as drogas. Um episódio que aconteceu em estúdio era que Robert Smith estava tão drogado em um momento que ao iniciar a gravação de uma música ele esperava a voz surgir nos altos falantes, pois havia esquecido que era o vocalista. Os problemas em estúdio não atrapalharam a finalização das gravações nem a turnê de grande sucesso. A banda estava em um momento tão bom de suas carreiras e de sua performance que algumas pessoas tinham dificuldade de distinguir a banda ao vivo da do estúdio.



Nessa época Smith havia entrado em depressão e não tinha mais certeza se valia a pena continuar vivendo daquele jeito. Ele havia adotado então a maquiagem que usa até hoje, influenciado pelo seu contato com a banda Siouxsie & The Banshees. Em 1982 a banda gravou o disco Pornography. O disco foi marcado por uma fase de muitas drogas e tragédias na banda, e total depressão de Smith. O disco chegou ao top 8 na Inglaterra. O disco não foi levado a sério na época pela imprensa, devido ao Closer do Joy Division, o que ironicamente está entre os favoritos dos fãs da banda ao redor do mundo. A turnê do disco foi muito desgastante para a banda, após uma briga em um clube entre Smith e Gallup, Gallup deixa o grupo. Smith fala que Gallup nem lembra de boa parte das gravações do album.




No final de 1982, Smith dissolveu a banda e procurou uma direção musical totalmente nova. The Cure agora era apenas Smith, que depois incluiria Tolhurst nos teclados ao invés da bateria. Lançaram então o single “pop” Let’s Go To Bed, que segundo Smith era uma paródia de todos os grupos e músicas da época que serviam para alienar os jovens, e também viria para chocar os críticos e talvez matar o The Cure. Em 1983 vieram mais dois singles seguindo o mesmo estilo, The Walk (muito críticado como um plágio em relação ao New Order) e a alegrezinha The Lovecats, naquele ponto a única música de Smith que sua mãe gostava!




Na mesma época, Smith, também estava oficialmente no Siouxsie & The Banshees como guitarrista. Ele chega gravar um album ao vivo, Nocturne, e um de estúdio, Hyæna, com a banda. Também na mesma época grava o album Blue Sunshine da banda The Glove, formado por ele e Steve Severin. Depois de lançar 4 singles, os junta com seus b-sides que formam o album Japanese Whispers. Esses singles marcaram por serem mais acessíveis, eletrônicos e upbeat, diferente dos trabalhos anteriores da banda.


Em 1984 a banda lança seu album mais experimental e ao mesmo tempo psicodélico, The Top, com algum tom político ao mesmo tempo. Em alguma faixas Smith tocou quase todos os instrumentos, menos bateria, tocada por Andy Anderson e saxophone por Porl Thompson que retornara a banda. Eles então entraram em turnê com Tolhurst, Thompson, Anderson e o baixista Phil Thornalley, que rendeu o primeiro disco ao vivo da banda, Concert. No final da turnê Anderson foi demitido por ter destruído um quarto de hotel e substituído por Boris Williams. Thornalley deixa a banda é substituído por Simon Gallup, que também retorna ao The Cure. Robert Smith então expressa a sua satisfação com a formação afirmando que agora eles eram uma banda novamente.




Em 1985 a nova formação lançou The Head On The Door que alcançou 7º lugar na Inglaterra e 59º nos USA. O álbum possui várias músicas que são favoritas dos fãs. Ele é considerado como um marco de mudança no som do The Cure na verdade o definindo como um pop longe da psicodelia do The Top e longe do eletrônico de Japanese Whispers. Após o lançamento desse disco eles embarcaram em uma turnê que chegou a vir ao Brasil para show no Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Porto Alegre.





Durante a turnê a banda lançou sua primeira coletânea de singles, Standing On A Beach com um vídeo chamado Staring At The Sea com os videos das músicas e também um outro vídeo ao vivo, In Orange. Em 1986 os problemos alcóolicos de Lol Tolhurst o estavam prejudicando em perfomances ao vivo e frequentemento o tecladista do Psychedelic Furs, Roger O’Donnell era chamado para tocar em seu lugar. Em 1987 eles lançaram o album duplo Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, e nele o seu single mais famoso na América até aquele ponto, Just Like Heaven. O video foi eleito o melhor video alternativo de todos os tempos pelo programa MTV’s 120 minutes. O solo de guitarra da música The Kiss chegou a ser usada em Miami Vice e banda entrou em turnê novamente.




Em 1988 a história da banda foi contada no livro Ten Imaginary Year e Tolhurst mesmo não tendo saído da banda oficialmente foi substituído por Roger O’Donnell. Em 1989 eles lançam o album Disintegration que chega ao 3º lugar na Inglaterra com quatro hitsingles (Lullaby, Fascination Street, Pictures Of You e Lovesong). Se torna o album de maior sucesso da banda mundialmente. Pouco antes do lançamento Tolhurst deixa a banda e apenas Smith permanece como único membro fundador. Tolhurst por ainda estar na folha de pagamento da banda é creditado no disco como outros instrumentos mesmo não tendo participado de nada nas gravações.





Em 1990 a banda lança uma coletânea de remixes, Mixed Up. Em Maio desse ano, O’Donnell deixa a banda e o roadie de longa data assume os teclados e guitarras. Em 1992 a banda lança o seu album de maior sucesso, Wish que imediatamente chega a 1º lugar na Inglaterra e 2º nos Estados Unidos. Eles embarcam em mais uma nova turnê e lançam dois albums ao vivo, Show e Paris e um EP em K7 raríssimo com 4 músicas instrumentais que sobraram das gravações de Wish chamado Lost Wishes.



Porl Thompson deixa a banda em 1993 para tocar com Robert Plant e Jimmy Page do Led Zeppelin e Bamonte assume as guitarras. A banda então contribui com a trilha sonora do filme O Corvo com a música Burn a única música inédita da formação Smith-Gallup-Williams-Bamonte. Essa formação também fez um cover de Jimmy Hendrix para um tributo, Purple Haze.

Em 1994, Tolhurst processou Smith e a Fiction alegando ser dono do nome The Cure e após uma longa batalha jurídica Tolhurst acabou perdendo. Boris Williams então deixa a banda e é substitído pro Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell acaba retornando para a banda completando assim a formação da banda que mais durou Smith-Gallup-Bamonte-Cooper-O’Donnell. A primeira música que eles escreveram juntos foi “Dredd Song” para o filme Judge Dredd em 1995 e também uma cover de David Bowie, Youg Americans para uma coletânea de rádio.

Em 1996 a banda faz sua segunda passagem pelo Brasil com shows wm São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro para o Hollywood Rock e lança o album Wild Mood Swings, um disco mais sóbrio e próximo do rcok convencional que recebeu menos atenção do que deveria devido sua diversidade de sons e por músicas mais fracas terem ser escolhidas como singles. Em 1997 a banda lança a coletânea Galore que seria uma continuação de Staring At The Sea/Standing On A Beach e continha todos os singles lançados de 1987 a 1997 e também um single novo, Wrong Number que tinha a participação do guitarrista de longa data de David Bowie, Reeves Gabrels que acompanhou a banda em alguns shows de festivais como guitarrista convidado. Em 1998 Robert Smith apareceu no desenho animado South Park, e a banda contribuiu para a trilha do filme dos Arquivos X com a música More Than This e para um tributo ao Depeche Mode com a música World In My Eyes.



Em 2000 eles lançam o album indicado ao Grammy Bloodflowers. Segundo Smith ele seria a terceira parte de uma trilogia que havia começado com Pornography em 1982 e Disintegration em 1989. Eles entram em turnê e em 2001 deixam o selo Fiction e lançam o seu Greates Hits acompanhado de DVD e um album raro Acoustic Hits. No mesmo ano, após 25 anos de estrada eles se firmam como provavelmente a banda mais influente no rock alternativo, mostrando influências em grandes bandas como Radiohead, Lush, Mogwai, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Sigur Rós entre várias outras.


Em 2002 eles continuaram a grava e também fizeram shows de 3 horas tocando por completo e na ordem os albuns Pronography, Disintegration e Bloodflowers no Tempodrome em Berlin que rendeou o DVD Trilogy em 2003. Em 2004 a banda lança uma caixa de raridades chamada Join The Dots: B-Sides and Rarities, 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years). A caixa tem 70 músicas da banda, algumas inéditas e um livreto de 76 páginas com fotografias, história e citações da banda.


No dia 28 de Junho de 2004 a banda lança seu primeiro album homônimo pelo selo iam records e partem em turnê com várias bandas criando o festival Curiosa. Smith selecionou a dedo os 11 participantes que abririam os shows do The Cure que foram: Interpol, The Rapture, Mogwai, Muse, Cursive, Head Automatica, Thursday, Scarling, The Cooper Temple Clause, and Melissa Auf Der Maur, divididos em dois palcos.

O Album The Cure estreou no Top Ten tanto na Inglaterra quanto nos USA. Também recebeu críticas muito positivas sendo aclamado como melhor album da banda desde Disintegration de 1989. A banda ganhou o prêmio MTV Icon em 2004, entregue por Marilyn Manson com apresentações de bandas americanas (blergh!) fazendo covers de músicas famosas do The Cure como AFI (Just Like Heaven), blink-182 (A Letter to Elise), Razorlight (Boys Don’t Cry) e Deftones (If Only Tonight We Could Sleep). Após o programa Smith incluiu músicas de AFI, Blink 182 e the Deftones em seu setlist durante um especial do programa John Peel da BBC Radio 1.

Atualmente a banda está relançando todos os albums aos poucos do primeiro até Bloodflowers de 2000, tendo lançado os quatro primeiros (Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Faith e Pornography) com um disco de bonus com material nunca lançado antes como demos, performances ao vivo e out-takes. Os próximos albums a serem relançados vão ser The Top, The Head on the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me e Blue Sunshine do The Glove ainda em 2006.

Em 2005, Smith demite O’Donnell e Bamonte. A banda chega a tocar como um trio antes de anunciar em Junho de 2005 o retorno de Porl Thompson para tocar no festival Live 8 em Paris. A banda participa então das gravações do album beneficente Make Some Noise com uma cover de John Lennon, a música Love que será lançado ainda em 2006. A banda está em estúdio gravando o seu novo album que deve ser lançado em Agosto.

Cure News: “- New album next april 2006 with a new Cure World Tour.

- The album will be produced by Robert himself !! Robert told us that Ross Robinson is a great man and he will be involved in the making of the new album but not as a Producer.

- Robert told us that the new album will have keyboards !! Robert and Porl will play them and at the moment they are not thinking about a new cure member.

- Robert is in contact with Severin and maybe he is going to do a collaboration in the new album but not like a new Cure member.

- Robert is really happy with this new line-up. He thinks it was important to take a ‘new direction’ now.”

Siouxsie & the Banshees

Siouxsie and the Banshees are a British gothic rock band. Their musical career has also encompassed the punk and new wave genres, however.

Formation

The band was originally formed to fill an empty space on a bill at the first UK based ‘international punk rock festival’. This show was organised by Malcolm McLaren at the 100 Club in London’s Oxford Street on September 20th, 1976.

The initial line up consisted of ‘Bromley Contingent’ members Siouxsie Sioux (real name Susan Janet Ballion), Steven Severin (aka Steve Spunker/Havoc), Marco Pirroni (later of Adam and the Ants and Rema Rema) and Sid Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie), later of the Sex Pistols, on drums. On this occasion their set consisted of a lengthy and chaotic unrehearsed improvisation of “The Lord’s Prayer”, which also included lines from songs like “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, “Smoke On The Water” and “Twist and Shout”.

“God it was awful” and “excruciating!” were two eye-witness accounts of their performance. This was not a unanimous view, however. A recording of the concert, though of relatively poor quality, demonstrates that the group gave a performance which commanded and repaid attention.

Style and notoriety

Siouxsie courted much controversy in the band’s early days with her dress, often wearing ‘bondage’ clothes and fetish wear. She was also heavily critisised for wearing swastika armbands, although she always maintained that this was intended to be for ’shock value’ rather than any form of display of Nazi or fascist political sympathies.

Pistols guitarist Steve Jones’ infamous “you dirty bastard, what fuckin’ rotter” comment during the band’s December 1976 interview with Bill Grundy, which helped to fuel their notoriety, was sparked when Grundy attempted to ‘chat up’ Siouxsie on prime time TV.

History

By February 1977 the Banshees were taking themselves seriously as a musical unit. They recruited Kenny Morris and Pete Fenton to their line up, which was by now gigging regularly and had attracted a solid fan base. Fenton was subsequently sacked and replaced in July by John McKay. It was not until 1978 that they finally obtained a record contract with Polydor Records, where upon they released their first single “Hong Kong Garden” (which reached the top 10 in the UK), followed soon after by the album The Scream.

Their second album, Join Hands, was released in 1979, and included a lengthy version of the aforementioned “Lord’s Prayer” track. However, two days into a tour promoting this album, Morris and McKay unexpectedly quit the band. They were hastily replaced by Robert Smith (whose band The Cure opened for the Banshees during the tour) on guitar and Budgie (real name Peter Clarke, formerly of The Slits and Big In Japan) on drums. After the completion of the tour, Budgie stayed on as the Banshees’ permanent drummer, whilst John McGeoch, formerly of Magazine joined as guitarist.

McGeoch played on the albums Kaleidoscope, Ju-Ju, and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse. McGeoch was hospitalized in 1979 after collapsing onstage during the tour for the latter. He was replaced on tour by Smith, who later became a full time member. Smith contributed to the live double album Nocturne and Hyaena, but quit the following year to concentrate all his energy on fronting the Cure.

Ex-Clock DVA guitarist John Valentine Carruthers replaced Smith. The Banshees re-recorded the The Thorn EP with Carruthers and cellist/keyboardist Martin McCarrick, who later became a full-time member.

1986 saw the release of Tinderbox and the single “Cities in Dust,” followed in 1987 by the cover album Through the Looking Glass. Carruthers was absent from one of the music videos.

Following a long break, the rest of the band recruited McCarrick and the ex-Specimen guitarist Jon Klein and recorded Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture. Klien left after the completion of their last album and was replaced on tour by ex-Psychedlic Furs guitarist Knox Chandler.

While probably best known for songs like “Kiss Them For Me”, Siouxsie and the Banshees has done everything from punk (in the 1970s) to goth to new wave. How to classify this band depends on what era/song/album one is talking about.

Siouxsie and her husband Budgie also started a side-project band called The Creatures.

The Dreamshow DVD is released in the UK on July 25th 2005.. The rest of the world’s release dates will be announced by mid July. But it seems that the USA will be in September this year..

Technically the UK version is Region 0, PAL - so it can be use anywhere in the world on equipment that reads PAL (most players do these days, but ‘NTSC’ countries do not advertise this: USA, Canada, Japan, most of South America.) The main area to watch out is that your TV can use a PAL signal, otherwise you’ll only see it in black and white.. it will still look and sound great.. but it was filmed in COLOUR (COLOR) ..

The end result is stunning, two hours of footage plus extras including 5 tracks from the incredible 100 club shows and an interview with Siouxsie and Budgie.
